Developing My Career in Media

This past summer, I had an opportunity that most kids who love sports only dream about. I was finally able to fulfill my dream of being in an NBA locker room. I can imagine that almost everyone who is reading this blog is wondering how I got to do this. I was lucky enough to meet the head coach of my hometown Chicago Bulls, Fred Hoiberg, at a local restaurant early in the summer.

I was with my dad, and if it was not for him, I am not sure I would have had the courage to go up to him. I am a sports junkie, so seeing him was a big deal to me. I went up to him and introduced myself, and we talked basketball for about ten to fifteen minutes. It was awesome to see that he was such a down to earth person. As we were wrapping up our discussion, I invited him to play golf with my dad and I. Coach said he would do his best to fit a round into his busy schedule, and he gave his number to me. I reached out to him the next day, and we scheduled a round for early August. I was so excited that I could barely contain myself. Hoiberg brought his assistant coach, Jim Boylen, who was also a terrific guy. Midway through the round, Boylen invited me to the Bulls game against the Phoenix Suns this upcoming November.

I still cannot wait for that day. Anyways, my dad and I reached out to the editor of Hinsdale Magazine for the possibility of doing a cover story on coach about the new look Chicago Bulls. He was completely on board with my vision, and he gave me the green light. I interviewed coach at the Bulls new practice facility, the Advocate Center. I have plans for continuing my journalism career with Hinsdale Magazine and I am excited to see new opportunities that come my way. Check out the full article about the new look Bulls and coach starting on page 26.

Collaborating in Online Communities

This week in class, we learned about a lot about online gaming. I was pretty familiar with it because I would always play sports games growing up online on my Xbox. I love the capabilities of being allowed to do everything from trash talk to strategy. A ton of my friends used to, and still do for that matter, play video games such as Skyrim, Modern Warfare or Halo. (Link trailer to buy the games) However, I just never really had time to get into them, but that does not mean I was not fascinated with them. I loved the possibilities of collaboration and connections that could potentially be formed. It felt as if there was a strong sense of community involved when these two forces joined and played a game together. There is also a vibe of competition, which could be a great tool for enhancing leadership. Funny enough, I am curious about trying out these games now. I will look to collaborate this upcoming weekend!

Online Success

We have had classes online this week, but I enjoy learning online. I have taken several online classes in the past for a variety of reasons. I enjoy online classes because it gives me an opportunity to manage my time in a very efficient manner. With internships outside of college classes, I am sometimes stressed out because I have a boat load of school work to complete. It is a hassle to have such a busy schedule. Online classes offer a ton of flexibility for my schedule in particular since each week is different.

I have such a great privilege to have the internship I work at. I am beginning to be more grateful as each day passes. I have decided to look for an additional twenty hours of work per week because I want to invest my time in my passions. I am so excited to continue learning new techniques that I can use in mixed media. I have been beginning to read more and more blogs as this semester has continued. I enjoy reading about the journeys some of my favorite photographers have had. Check them out. Both are incredible photographers and fascinating storytellers!
